Japan has given the world sushi, kabuki and improved consumer products like the radio, camera and automobile. But what is it to be Japanese?
To be more like us, they learn English, wear western clothing and have adopted Rock'n'Roll as if it was their own. This website is dedicated
to bringing you closer
to them and go in the opposite direction. Many can't afford to go to Japan, so this web-
site brings Japan to where you are, so you can get a better idea of what is like
to be there even though you aren't.
I worked there for 2 1/2 years and resided just outside central Tokyo. Each day, I took the train into Shinjuku and was amongst millions who
passed though the station each day.
During rush hour, the station is packed full of people:
Rush Hour in Shinjuku station
Japanese train in morning
Beautiful Tokyo time lapse in rush hour
Conveyor belt sushi with touch screen ordering
It is very common for foreign males (gaijin) to learn Japanese from women in Japan, but what they may not realize is that they likely will end up learning
language that only females use. (All westerners are referred to as
gaijin.) This website will introduce you to a few Japanese words, but it is by no means the central
focus of the website (the food is). If you wish to learn more Japanese, the main thing to remember is that the intonation is the same level for each syllable (monotonic). Those wishing to learn
Japanese should find someone to practice with -- other than just watching videos on YouTube.
Learn Basic Japanese: Greetings (Lesson 1)
Japanese 101 - Greetings - Level One
Though it isn't necessary to learn the Japanese system of writing, learning it FIRST does tend to help with all further studies -- but for the purposes of this website, one can skip it, as
learning to write is not always essential in order to speak a language. If one is intending to learn Japanese, overall, one must choose options that are complete and set a pace that is
in keeping with one's learning style. As with anything, practice is key. For now, you may just want to use English. It is pretty much Japan's second language (unofficially that is).
Learn Basic Japanese: Hiragana & Katagana (Lesson 0)
In Japan, children learn
Hiragana and
Katakana
first and then tackle
Kanji later in life. This website will touch upon none of these writing systems. It will stick to use of
Romaji (Romanization of Japanese). This website will briefly touch upon use of Japanese & emphasize what
the site truly is about: Japanese food. There is a selection of music on the music page, but is NOT the main focus.
Making California Rolls
IS what this site is about ... and how to eat sushi.
