Mnemonics

For the beginning music student, reading musical notation from the staves can be tricky at first. Fortunately, clever music teachers have come up with several mnemonic devices to help remember the note names of the staves' lines and spaces (always ordered from bottom to top of the staff).

These mnemonics start on the bottom line of each staff and go up:

There are those who say mnemonics should not be learnt. "The best way is to use a book with, say, treble clef reading exercises, introducing one then two, then three, etc. different notes. You are not supposed to learn music notation at once, in a day." Learn notation gradually one step at a time. There are even some who don't learn to read/write music.
