1966-67: End of Touring

Brian felt like he was out of a job. Exhausted from dealing with more touring problems, he started taking more sleeping pills.

Despite all the Beatles successes, Epstein was finding it difficult to manage their affairs. In the summer of 1966, they had trouble in both Japan and the Philippines -- and because of what happened in Manila, they vowed to NEVER return there. When they landed in India, they did not get much of a break as over 600 screaming fans were waiting for them. To make matters worse, upon arriving back in London, an ambulance had to be radioed ahead for Brian as he was gravely ill (July 8, 1966). About a year later, Brian died of an overdose (carbitol poisoning), but many claim it was suicide.

World Tour

The Beatles toured Germany, Japan and Manila on their world tour. Because of all the screaming, most people could not hear what they were singing most of the time -- and the Beatles tired of performing their songs live s they were getting harder to perform on stage. Vocals on songs like Nowhere Man were not easy to perform due to more complex harmonies and guitar parts.

The Beatles last concert was in Candlestick Park in San Francisco on August 29, 1966. They would never tour again. They had had enough and wanted a holiday.

"Bigger Than Jesus"

Amid all the trouble in the summer of 1966, John's remarks about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus got him into a lot of trouble. Brian had to bail him out, and it was not something Brian wanted to do. Press conferences were beginning to become unpleasant affairs where they had to do damage control (August 11, 1966). Brian convinced the Beatles that it was in their best interest. He even spoke on their behalf. This troubled Brian.
